When people ask, “How happy are you?” the usual answers tend to land somewhere between “fine,” “busy,” and “could be worse.” My mother’s fave response in her sing song Caribbean accent was, “I’m fighting up”. Yet the truth is that happiness has never been a single state of mind you either possess or lack, nor is it a destination you arrive at after successfully achieving a set of criteria or satisfying a list of the “right” conditions.
Instead, conceptualizing happiness as a kaleidoscope, a wheel, a whole messy andcomplicated flower, is a more realistic definition in alignment with everyday life. It gives you a clearer set of instructions and roadmap to being happy, a stronger ability to actually measure how happy you are at any stage in your life, and hence an ability to self-correct your course (as opposed to waiting to be favoured with “the miracle of happiness”).
That is why I created The HEFFT Way® Power Flower®. Deceptively, it is easily mistaken to be another checklist until you come up to speed with happiness as a holistic construct. As you do, you will begin to see your life in its wholeness without collapsing everything and the fullness of who you are into a single measure of success or failure. The flower opens you to the possibility that different parts of your life bloom and wither at different times (or even simultaneously), and that this shifting pattern is not a flaw but the nature of being alive.
The stark reality is that you may be thriving in work and career while feeling bone-dry in play; you may have abundance and prosperity on paper while feeling empty in your relationships; you may be religious about your exercise routine and yet forget to nourish gratitude. None of these contradictions mean that you are broken. They simply mean you are human.
Why the Wheel Matters
The wheel shows you two truths at once: where you are flourishing, and where you are not. It is a mirror that reflects both your vitality and your neglect, reminding you that “almost happy” is never quite enough. In fact, “almost happy” can feel like a punishment worse than unhappiness because it is this nagging feeling that something is wrong in the middle of everything else in your life being amazing, yet you cannot say what. Crudely put, it is the itch that you can neither locate nor scratch.
This is the same approach I use within my online health and wellness coaching services. When you look at the flower honestly, it becomes a form of wellness counseling, an invitation to notice what is thriving and what has quietly slipped into the background. As a certified wellness coach online and a health advocate wellness program in practice, I help people see their lives in all their contradictions and guide them to chart a course back toward the beautiful, contented balance of self acceptance of human imperfection, tied to its simultaneous brilliant possibilities.
Now, Look Again
Ask yourself, where am I on this wheel today? Not yesterday when you replayed old regrets. Not in the vague “someday” when you imagine that everything will fall into place. Today. Because today is the only day of your life.
Perhaps your ‘relationships’ petal is lush and abundant but your ‘creativity’ has curled inward. Perhaps your ‘career’ has overtaken the whole garden while your ‘play’ petal is gathering dust. You do not need to burn everything down or book a one-way ticket across the world (though that could be fun too, and you could do all of this either whilst you are there or when you return; it’s always your choice). What you need is to recognize the truth of the pattern revealed in the flower, to see it as a map and use it to understand that happiness can be practiced one petal at a time.
Personal development in counselling and true self development counselling as I practice offers you not a false promise of a life without contradictions, but teaches you a skillset for learning to live inside those contradictions and dark patches that spot any life with honesty and grace.
The Skill of Balance
The wheel requires awareness that when one petal is starved of energy, the whole flower becomes strained. Using the wheel does not require you to aim for a perfectly symmetrical flower, nor does it require you to expand every petal all at once (or perhaps ever, because sometimes life just comes with patches of grey in some areas no matter how hard we try, but try we must, so at least we can be happy with our efforts and proud of ourselves. That in itself can be enough in many circumstances).
Genuine health and wellness coaching services provide the practicality of balance, the daily choice to notice, to nurture, to water what matters now as opposed to a fantasy of permanent equilibrium.
So where are you on the wheel? Which parts of your life are blooming, which ones have grown brittle, and what small shift could you make on this, the only day of your life, to bring one more petal alive?
Happiness is not a finish line waiting at the far end of achievement. It is a practice, a rhythm, a returning. And the wheel is not here to judge you. It is here to remind you that life, in all its disorder and contradiction, is still messy, joyful, real, and utterly yours.
