Why Finding “Home” Feels So Hard Right Now
Does “home” feel impossible to you right now? Prices are brutal, interest rates are punishing, and stability feels like a dream slipping further away.
I know the feeling. I’ve moved so many times I’ve lost count, more than twenty moves in the last twenty years. Sometimes it was once a year, sometimes two or three times in a single year. At best, I’d get two or three years of stability before packing up again. Never long enough to truly exhale.
That’s the expat life. You learn how to start over, how to make your home wherever you land, even when it’s exhausting. And it always is. Because whether we admit it or not, our things anchor us. Walking into a room and seeing your favorite chair in the corner, or slipping on that old t-shirt without rummaging through boxes, those small familiar things make us feel safe and that we have the dignity of a home by letting us “belong here”.
Home Is More Than Four Walls
Home is never just about walls or furniture. It’s about love.
Home is where love shows up in the smallest gestures that remind you that you belong.
Being loved doesn’t mean someone is there every day. Sometimes it’s a stranger helping when your car breaks down. Sometimes it’s a coworker who quietly leaves a cup of tea on your desk when you’re having a rough day. A warm shower, a walk in nature. Those moments matter as they create a life that feels safe, connected, and dignified no matter where you are.
Traditional Homeownership Feels Out of Reach for Many of Us
Let’s be honest with each other, buying a home feels impossible for many of us today. Prices are sky-high, interest rates are punishing, and wages haven’t kept pace. The dream of ownership feels further away than ever and for many of us feels simply impossible in our lifetime.
But here’s the secret no one tells you: you don’t have to own a house to create a home. Home is where you feel safe. Home is where you are loved. Home is the community you weave around you.
A real home makes you feel dignified.
How to Create Home Anywhere You Live
As an Online Health and Wellness Coach, I’ve seen how powerful it is to create home even in temporary or rented spaces. The work of a Certified Wellness Coach Online is about guiding people to find belonging and peace in their environments, no matter their circumstances.
Ask yourself:
• Does my home space give me light and breathing room?
• Is my home space clean and uncluttered?
• Have I created distinct areas for the major activities in my life, sleep, work, rest, connection?
• How have I brought calming elements of nature into my home space?
Am I careful about who I let into my home space and what kind of conversations, thoughts, and activities am I allowing there? Do these add to the calm, dignity, and upliftment of me, of others, and of my space?
These small choices add up to well-being.
The Secret Power of Community
Your house does not exist in isolation, it exists in symbiosis with your community.
Wellness is never only individual; it is communal. Your community makes you stronger.
Choosing your neighborhood with intention, saying hello to neighbors, supporting local shops, or being the one to create connections all shape a community where you are rooted and belong. Don’t wait to be invited. What would happen if you created a small gathering and invited a few people? One person showing up is success, and even more powerful is your willingness to put yourself out there. Keep at it, and your people will come.
You’ve probably heard the saying that it is better to have a tiny home space in a great neighborhood than a mansion in a terrible one.
You are not only paying for a house, you are paying for the neighborhood that surrounds it. And through wellness counseling services, I often remind people that community care is a form of self-care.
Redefining What “Home” Means for You
Maybe the real question isn’t when will I be able to buy a house, but instead am I building a life that feels like home?
You can live in the biggest house and still feel disconnected. Or you can share a room and feel fully alive because you’ve made it yours and surrounded yourself with beautiful things you love and with people who care about you. A Certified Wellness Counselor can help you rethink homeownership not just as a financial milestone, but as the foundation for a safe, fulfilling, and dignified life.
The strength of your happiness comes from the home and community you create. And that is something you can start building right now with or without a mortgage deed.
